Driving in South Yarra
South Yarra sits on both sides of Punt Road. The west side is in the City of Melbourne and the east side is in the City of Stonnington. Wherever you live, the driving is much the same: dense, busy and slow.
Chapel Street and Toorak Road. These two shopping strips carry trams, buses, delivery vans and drivers looking for a park. Trams run on routes 58, 72 and 78 through the suburb. Low-speed bumps, side swipes and mirror strikes are common, especially around the Toorak Road and Chapel Street corner near the Como Centre, and near the Jam Factory and Prahran Market.
Punt Road. A busy north-south route that splits the suburb. Stop-start traffic means rear-end bumps.
Apartment car parks. A lot of South Yarra drivers park in tight underground car parks. Concrete pillars, narrow ramps and tight turns cause scraped bumpers, kerbed wheels and long scratches down the side of a car. These are often quick, simple repairs, but on a prestige car the paint match matters.
Street parking. Narrow side streets with cars parked on both sides mean door dings and knocked mirrors.
The drive to our Carnegie shop
| Starting from | Simplest way to us |
|---|---|
| South Yarra station and Toorak Road | East along Toorak Road, south on Williams Road, then east along Dandenong Road to 1064 |
| Chapel Street | South to Dandenong Road, then east |
| Como House and the Williams Road side | South down Williams Road to Dandenong Road, then east |
Outside peak, it’s around 10 to 15 minutes. In peak, and on weekends near Chapel Street, give yourself more time. Dandenong Road has tram tracks along its city end, so watch the lanes as you head out.
